Author's note and Standard Disclaimer: This story is a Fan Fiction story 
written by Eric J. Hanf.  It has not been authorized, read, consumed, burned,
or even looked at by any employee of Bally/Midway/Williams Entertainment, 
especially by any person involved in the development, programming and release 
of the Mortal Kombat video game series.  It is based on characters from the 
video game Mortal Kombat ][.  The story is original, except for a line borrowed 
from the story "Trial by Fire" written by Steve Karstesen. This line, "Master 
of the Elements" appears once in this story.  (Kay, Steve? :) ) Enjoy.

                               As the Smoke clears
                        A FanFic story by Eric J. Hanf

     I believe myself to be the last of the ninja clan known as the Lin Kuei.
Wait, that's not really a good way to start this off, is it?  No...  But I 
think I really am the last of my clan.  My name...  My given name is Smoke. Of
course, that's not my real name, but it has been so long since I have heard my
birth name, I have forgotten it. So Smoke will do.  I am called Smoke because
of the elemental power I command.  I command the powers of smoke.  Ever since I
have been in this horrible place, I have lost some control over my power, so
I constantly emit smoke from my body. Actually, this distracts my enemies in 
battle, so I may use it if I ever get home.  I am in the Outworld. It is ruled 
by Shao Khan, a spineless bastard who hides behind his armies and champions.  
But, he is the one who destroyed the rest of my clan.  I know he has the power
to do it...

[Date: a few days later]

     This forest scares the shit out of me.  The trees...  they're alive!! They
all have faces, and they yell all night long.  Unlees, that is, they are eating
one of the fools unlucky enough to have lost his way in the forest.  But, the
forest is my home, and I must make the most of it.  I share this forest with 
another, a woman named Jade.  To call her beautiful would be an understatement.
But she is in no way the least bit vulnerable.  She has a pair of iron gunsen
that she wields with deadly accuracy and skill.  We see each other in the 
forest occasionly, but we don't talk much, for fear of attracting the 
attention of the trees.  If I only could get out of here and back home...

[Date: the next day]

     That bastard!  He lied to me!  There ARE Lin Kuei alive!  I saw him with 
my own eyes!  It was Lo Min.  Actually, I guess his name is Sub-Zero now, 
because that is what Shao Kahn called him.  Has it really been that long?
When I was sent on the mission to kill Goro, he was just starting his training
in the elemental arts.  Judging from the way he fought, he must be a Master
of The Elements now.  He was fighting Barakain a clearing here in the forest.
Baraka is one of the many things out here that aren't quite human.  He has a 
pair of retractable sword blades inplanted in his forarms.  His face is the 
worst part of him.  He has sharp, metallic teeth in a mouth that is eternally
pulled back into an insane grin.  Lo M...  I mean, Sub-Zero whipped him pretty
good.  Maybe I'll give him a message.

[Date: the next day]

     I appeared to Sub-Zero today and told him to meet me in Goro's Lair.  
When we met, he told me that not only was he a Lin Kuei, but that the clan has
expanded since my disappearance.  In fact, even though he was sent to kill 
Shang Tsung, he was told to search for me, because it was known that I had
disappeared on a mission to kill Goro.  I felt glad that even though I had 
been missing for a very long time, my brethren had not forgotten about me.
Unfortunatly, Mileena decided to break up our little conversation right about
then.  She is an assasin in the employ of Shao Khan.  She is very fast, but I
am faster.  I tossed her through the portal and told Sub-Zero to jump through.
On the other side, he warned me about the Lin Kuei imposters here in the 
Outworld, Reptile and Scorpion.  I know about Reptile, but I have never seen
this Scorpion guy.  I wonder what he is like.

[Date: a week later]

     It's all over.  Shao Khan is dead. And, Sub-Zero is the one that killed 
him.  It was great. Now, after all of these years, I finally get to go home.
I can't wait.  I wonder how much things have changed.  It will take some 
getting used to, but I can adjust.  I think I am gonna put this journal in 
the shrine in the clan village.  It may teach our young ones something.  Then 
agin, maybe not.  But at the end, when the smoke clears, only time will tell.
